MEDIA RELEASE: Manly Boy Charlton Pool recieves $1.4m federal grant to reduce emissions and energy bills

20 February 2025

Zali Steggall MP welcomes the Minister for Climate Change & Energy’s Announcement today of a $1.4m federal government grant for Andrew Boy Charlton Pool in Manly. The grant will co-fund upgrades and the replacement of the pools existing gas pool and domestic water heating systems with energy efficient electric heat pump systems.

Zali Steggall MP said “This is wonderful news. The project will have a dual benefit of reducing the swim centre’s emissions by more than 1,378 tonnes CO2-e each year and will also facilitate welcome cost savings for the council.”

In this term, Warringah has been the beneficiary of over $110 million in Federal grants.

“I’m proud that my team and I have been able to support the Warringah community in learning more about the grant opportunities available, and where possible advocating on their behalf,” Steggall said.

Northern Beaches Council Mayor Sue Heins said, “Council welcomes the Federal government's grant which will support us to do the work at Manly Andrew Boy Charlton Pool and provide a win for our environment and Council's budget.”

Currently, gas accounts for approximately 34% of Council’s emissions, with nearly 90% of this usage concentrated at MABC. The proposed upgrade involves replacing the existing gas pool and domestic water heating systems with energy-efficient electric heat pump systems.

Northern Beaches Council was one of 58 local government bodies included in the $100 million Community Energy Upgrades Fund.

Each year 8 million people use community sporting infrastructure, including local councils. One-off grants of between $25,000 to $2.5 million have been awarded through the merit-based program, with local government providing at least 50 per cent of project costs.

Round 1 of this grant’s program was oversubscribed, with 165 applications overall for the first $50 million package of funding. Round 2 is expected to open shortly, with unsuccessful applicants from round 1 warmly encouraged to reapply.
