Zali Steggall MP calls for calm after shark attacks, thanks brave responders
20 January 2026
I want to acknowledge the deeply distressing shark attack at North Steyne. My thoughts are with the young man who was attacked and who remains in a critical condition.
Thank you to the incredibly brave surfers, first responders, lifeguards and community members who rushed to help following this tragic incident, as well as those who assisted after the shark incident at Dee Why.
These incidents have shocked our community. The ocean is central to life on the Northern Beaches, and North Steyne and Dee Why are extremely popular surf and swimming beaches. But we also know the ocean can be dangerous, particularly following heavy rain, which can change conditions and increase shark activity.
All beaches in the Northern Beaches region are currently closed. I urge the community to remain calm, follow the advice of authorities, and respect the closures put in place to keep people safe.
These incidents remind us that our oceans are unpredictable places. Shark presence close to shore is being reported more frequently, and we must respond with modern, science-based solutions. Traditional shark nets are not the answer - they are outdated, environmentally damaging and not always effective. We need investment in contemporary shark monitoring, detection and early-warning systems, as well as improved public education about ocean conditions.
Right now, our focus must be on the recovery of those affected and the safety of our community. I encourage everyone to stay informed, look out for one another, and respect the ocean.
