STATEMENT: Zali Steggall OAM MP congratulates and welcomes new Ministry appointments for the 48th Parliament

13 May 2025

I would like to congratulate the Government Ministers of the 48th Parliament on their appointments and welcome the increased number of women in Cabinet.

With the Prime Minister’s leadership team now in place I’m looking forward to working productively with the government to progress important legislative reforms to support communities and reinvigorate our economy.

I congratulate the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen and Assistant Minister, Josh Wilson on their reappointments and welcome the appointment of Kate Thwaites as the Special Envoy for Climate Adaption and Resilience. Australia is already facing accelerating climate risks with rising costs social and financial costs. This is why I will continue to push for the National Climate Adaption Framework to be legislated and for my Climate Resilience Plan, which includes a $10b Climate Resilience Fund to protect communities. I commend the government on the work it has done on the renewables transition, but we must increase our emission reduction ambition so I will continue to push for Australia’s next Nationally Determined Contribution to be at least 75% emissions reduction by 2035.

Congratulations to Tanya Plibersek on her appointment as the Minister for Social Services, and Ged Kearney as Assistant Minister for social services and the prevention of Family Violence. The government has a once in a generation opportunity to raise the rate for social payments to support our most vulnerable and to drive meaningful action to counter gendered and family violence.

I congratulate Anne Aly on her appointment as Minister for Small Business, our small businesses remain the backbone of the Warringah community and there is much we can do to reduce barriers, provide financial relief and create and environment for small businesses to thrive.

I welcome Murray Watt as the Minister for Environment and Water. I will be advocating for the full suite of reforms to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to be completed, with urgency this term.

I also welcome Anika Wells to the role of Communications Minister. The ongoing rise (and impact) of digital and social media make this an extremely important portfolio and look forward to working with the minister to improve online safety and encourage the Minister to push for a full ban on gambling advertising as recommended by Inquiry led by the late Peta Murphy.

I look forward to continuing to engage with Special Minister of State Don Farrell on legislating much need needed Truth in Advertising reforms.

And congratulations to new Attorney General Michelle Rowland whom I hope will bring about stronger whistleblower protections.

I look forward to working constructively with the incoming ministers on these policy areas and many others in the incoming parliament.

I would also like thank outgoing Attorney General Mark Dreyfus and Minister for Innovation Ed Husic for their constructive work with the crossbench and myself in the previous term of parliament and look forward to continuing to engage with them this term.

I would like to congratulate Sussan Ley on her appointment as the new Leader of the Opposition. This marks a significant moment as the first woman to lead the Coalition, and I hope it signals a genuine shift towards more inclusive and forward-looking policies by the Federal Liberal Party.

I remain committed to working constructively with all sides of politics to deliver positive outcomes for our communities in the 48th Parliament.

Ends
