Zali Steggall MP welcomes Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion

Friday 9 January 2026

I welcome the establishment of the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion and commend the appointment of the Honourable Virginia Bell AC as Commissioner.

Ms Bell is a highly respected former High Court Justice whose experience and integrity are beyond question. It is deeply disappointing that some have sought to undermine her appointment.

The terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on 14 December, which targeted Jewish Australians, was devastating for the victims’ families and the broader Jewish community. Rising antisemitism and increasing pressure on Australia’s social cohesion raise urgent questions about whether our laws, institutions and systems are adequate to prevent, detect and respond to religious hatred, discrimination, intimidation and violence.

Australians rightly expect to live, learn, work and worship safely—free from intimidation, discrimination and violence.

Like many MPs, I have received a wide range of views and deep concern from my community following the Bondi attack. I strongly support a Royal Commission to fully investigate the circumstances of the attack and the broader rise in antisemitism. This is essential not only for the Australian Jewish community and the families of victims, but also for our wider society and protection of social cohesion.

This inquiry is an important opportunity to reaffirm Australia’s commitment to safety, inclusion and respect for all. As a proudly multicultural and multi-faith nation, we must stand united against division and hatred.
