STATEMENT: Albanese Government sits on the fence as climate target falls short

18 September 2025

The Albanese Government’s emissions reduction target of 62-70% target is weak. A backslide on the recommended range and not consistent with a 1.5-degree warmed world.

This range shows the Government is sitting on the fence and putting old industries ahead of safety, rather than fully embracing the opportunity to build a strong and future focused economy.

This target does not deliver the credibility and commitment required to meet the scale of the challenge.

It sets Australians on the more dangerous and costly risk trajectory of climate impacts, identified in the government’s very own National Climate Risk Assessment released earlier this week.

State and territory existing targets would already collectively reduce emissions by an estimated 66% to 71% by 2035. The Albanese Government’s range adds nothing at a national level.

This range is not consistent with the Paris Agreement commitment to set the strongest possible target. A safe climate and strong economy need a minimum of 75% emissions reduction target by 2035.
