Celebrating young athletes in Warringah

7 May, 2021

As I write, Greater Sydney (including Central Coast, Blue Mountains and Wollongong) is under greater restrictions. Please make sure you are fully aware of the restrictions and what you can and cannot do. For the latest information see the NSW Health website HERE.

Federally, the ban by the Government on Australians returning home from India until May 15 has been deeply concerning to me and my crossbench colleagues. Together, eight of us signed a joint letter to the Prime Minister urging him to bring Australians stranded in India back home.

The Government needs to urgently establish fit-for-purpose quarantine facilities to reduce the risk of leakage from current hotel quarantine.

It has been over a year since we have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and we have called on the Government to develop a long term plan that is clear, sensible and compassionate.

The Government has
threatened any Australians trying to return home with up to 5 years jail or $66,000 fine. This is a dangerous precedent and wrong.

You can read our media statement HERE and the see the joint letter HERE.

LOCAL SPORTING CHAMPIONS GRANTS ANNOUNCED

Congratulations to the Local Sporting Champions who were awarded yesterday at Freshwater. The grants are a federal initiative that identify talented athletes and offer between $500- $700 to go towards travelling costs, accommodation, meals, registration fees, uniforms and other expenses.

As someone who travelled extensively for skiing, I know how much these grants can help our young athletes.  I'm proud to say there have been over 100 Local Sporting Grants awarded to Warringah athletes since I was elected.

This has meant $65,500 has gone straight back to the community to support young athletes in sports such as rowing, canoeing, surf lifesaving, swimming, athletics, volleyball, water polo, tennis, basketball and sailing/yachting.

Congratulations all! The next round of Local Sporting Grants closes June 30. Check out our website here: https://www.zalisteggall.com.au/sport_grants

MOSMAN INDEPENDENT HUB OFFICIALLY OPENS

Last week I was thrilled to open the Mosman Independent Hub at Spit Junction! It was fantastic to meet so many new and familiar faces.

It is wonderful to have such a welcoming space on the Lower North Shore where Warringah residents can drop in and find out more about what is happening locally and in Federal politics.

The office is now open:
10-4pm Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
10-2.30pm Every first Saturday of the month

The official Warringah Electorate office remains in Manly at Level 2/17-19 Sydney Road, which you are also welcome to pop in to.

WARRINGAH YOUTH AMBASSADORS

We had our first Youth Ambassador meeting of Term 2 recently, where we discussed the issue of consent with a presentation by Consent Labs. As usual, I was blown away by the maturity of the Ambassadors when discussing such a complex and sometimes difficult topic.

I look forward to the next meeting in June.

SMALL BUSINESS HARDSHIP GRANTS

During COVID-19 many businesses were affected by the sudden closure during the Christmas and NYE lock down. Please see THIS LINK for more information:
