Reckless and Out of Touch: Liberals Abandoning Net-Zero Is a Step Backwards

The Liberal Party’s decision to abandon Australia’s net-zero by 2050 target is reckless and a massive step backwards.
At the last election, one in three Australians voted for an independent or minor party - a clear sign that millions feel the major parties no longer represent them.
Today’s announcement shows the federal Liberals, just like the Nationals, are now even further removed from community expectations over climate action in Australia. This decision makes the Coalition unelectable.
An overwhelming majority of Australians voters want real leadership on climate change – not denial and delay.
Net-zero drives clean energy investment, and that means cheaper bills, more jobs and a safer planet for all.
I note media reports that the Liberals want Australia to remain in the Paris Agreement while scrapping its net-zero commitment. I do not understand how this is compliant with the rules of the Paris Agreement, which requires all signatories to increase their commitments over time.
The crossbench stands ready to work with the government - and with any Liberal MPs who want to see Australia deliver credible, effective climate action that protects Australians and strengthens our economy for the decades ahead.
