MEDIA STATEMENT: Zali Steggall MP stands with Iranian Australians amid brutal regime crackdown

6 February 2026

Like many around the world, I have been shocked by the horrifying crackdown by the Iranian regime against its own people over the past few months.

I want to express my solidarity with Iranian Australians, many of whom fear for the safety of family and friends in Iran. Their anguish is further compounded by a communications blackout imposed to conceal the actions of the regime, which is preventing the Iranian diaspora from checking on the safety of loved ones.

This week I received a briefing from DFAT officials on the latest situation in Iran. The ordeal being inflicted on civilians - including killings, violence, imprisonment and intimidation - is a serious violation of fundamental human rights. Peaceful protests are a basic freedom that should never be met with reprisals.

Australia has a responsibility to stand up for human rights and to condemn state violence against civilians. I welcome the Albanese government’s actions to date, including financial sanctions and travel bans on Iranian individuals responsible for human rights violations.

I urge the government to continue to exert pressure on Iran though every available diplomatic and multilateral channel. The Iranian regime must be held accountable for its actions.

I stand with Iranian Australians in their calls for freedom and justice. Those needing emotional and psychological support can contact:
