STATEMENT: Beware the fine print on Coalition's climate plans

26 February 2025

Last night’s 7.30 report exposed serious concerns about the Coalition’s climate commitments –wavering on both Australia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and limiting our Net Zero targets to just electricity, rather than sector-wide targets.

Did they just say the quiet part out loud?

Is the Opposition looking to change the fine print on Australia’s climate commitments, and hoping voters won’t notice?

Peter Dutton must come clean, will he:

  • Confirm that the Coalition will honour the sector-wide 2050 Net Zero targets?

  • If so, how will this be achieved, noting the Climate Change Authority report setting out that an additional 2 Billion tonnes of CO2 will be emitted under the Coalition nuclear plan?

  • Commit that under a Coalition government, Australia will remain a signatory to the Paris Agreement?

  • Assure Australians a Coalition government will not walk back, or stall, decarbonisation efforts?

  • Outline what, under a Coalition Government, Australia’s 2035 NDC target under the Paris Agreement will be?

The Coalition’s pitch of getting Australia back on track will be taking Australia off track if progress in reducing emissions across sectors are reversed. Are they returning to climate risk denying and leaving millions of Australians at risk and exposed to unaffordable insurance?

As climate change escalates, the costs and risks of inaction continue to rise. Australia cannot afford to politicise our decarbonisation efforts - every degree of warming matters. Our leaders must be clear on their Net Zero ambitions and commit to action, not political games.
